Britain Welcomes Zelensky with Enthusiasm and a £2.2 Billion Loan

 


The United Kingdom has signed a major financial agreement with Ukraine, providing a £2.2 billion ($2.8 billion) loan to support Kyiv’s military defense. The loan, signed virtually by UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko, will be repaid using frozen Russian sovereign assets.

This agreement was finalized as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a warm welcome in London, following an intense meeting with Donald Trump at the White House on Friday.

Starmer Reaffirms the UK’s Support for Ukraine

Upon Zelensky’s arrival at 10 Downing Street, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer greeted him with strong words of encouragement. Addressing the Ukrainian leader, Starmer said, You are very, very welcome here. The British people are showing their support for you and for Ukraine.”

Outside the Prime Minister’s residence, dozens of people gathered to express their solidarity with Ukraine. During their meeting, Starmer reiterated Britain’s "absolute commitment" to backing Kyiv against Russia’s invasion. In response, Zelensky described the UK as a "strategic partner" in Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty.

Tensions Between Zelensky and Trump

Zelensky’s visit to London comes just after a heated exchange with Donald Trump at the White House. Reports suggest that Trump threatened to withdraw U.S. support for Ukraine unless Kyiv reached a peace agreement with Moscow.

Despite this tension, Zelensky emphasized the importance of American assistance, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “U.S. support has been crucial in helping us survive.” He also indicated Ukraine’s willingness to sign a metals agreement, marking the first step toward security guarantees.

A Shift in U.S. Foreign Policy?

Trump’s stance has alarmed European allies, especially after his direct conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many Western leaders fear a significant shift in U.S. policy, which has so far been the backbone of Ukraine’s defense strategy.

On Friday, concerns grew over the future of Western aid to Ukraine, as Trump’s unpredictable approach has raised doubts about long-term support from the U.S..
